fifth gear
Highway cruising ratio
Fifth gear is the highest gear in many manual transmissions, used at highway speeds for fuel efficiency.
Figuratively, to shift into fifth gear is to reach maximum speed or intensity: The campaign kicked into fifth gear after the debate.
Also called fifth.
