shift pattern
Transmission layout diagram
A shift pattern is the recurring schedule of work hours assigned to employees, especially in jobs requiring round-the-clock coverage.
Factory workers, nurses, and retail staff typically follow shift patterns that rotate between days, evenings, and nights: The new shift pattern has me working three twelves in a row.
In British usage, shift pattern also refers to the arrangement of gears in a manual transmission—the H-shaped layout showing where each gear sits.
