family motto
Hereditary guiding phrase
A family motto is a short phrase or saying adopted by a family as an expression of its values, aspirations, or identity.
Traditionally associated with aristocratic or heraldic families, mottos often appear on coats of arms and are frequently in Latin: The family motto was "Semper Fidelis".
Modern families sometimes adopt informal mottos that capture shared beliefs or inside jokes: Our family motto is "We don't quit".
