false imprisonment

Illegal holding captive

False imprisonment is the unlawful restraint of someone's freedom of movement.

In law, it's a tort and sometimes a crime—no actual prison is required, just preventing someone from leaving: The store detained her for shoplifting, but since she was innocent, she sued for false imprisonment.

The restraint can be physical, through threats, or by assertion of legal authority.
