civil suit

Non-criminal litigation

A civil suit is a legal case brought by one party against another to resolve a dispute or seek compensation, as opposed to a criminal case where the government prosecutes someone for a crime.

In civil suits, the plaintiff typically seeks money damages or a court order rather than jail time for the defendant: She filed a civil suit against her former employer for wrongful termination.
