coerced confession
Pressured guilt statement
A coerced confession is an admission of guilt obtained through pressure, threats, or manipulation rather than given freely.
Police interrogation tactics—extended questioning, sleep deprivation, false promises of leniency—can produce coerced confessions, sometimes from innocent people.
Such confessions are generally inadmissible in court: The conviction was overturned after the court found his confession had been coerced.
