protective custody
Safety through confinement
Protective custody is confinement meant to shield someone from harm rather than punish them.
Authorities may place witnesses, vulnerable prisoners, or those at risk of violence in protective custody: The informant was held in protective custody until the trial.
The term can also euphemize detention that serves the state's interests more than the detainee's safety.
