eval

Parse and run

Eval is programmer shorthand for evaluate, a function that executes code stored as text.

In many programming languages, eval takes a string and runs it as if it were written directly in the program: eval("2 + 2") returns 4.

Security-conscious developers treat eval warily—it can execute malicious code if fed untrusted input.

Outside programming, eval appears in gaming and online contexts as shorthand for evaluation: What's your eval of the situation?
