training mode
Guided practice environment
Training mode is a setting in video games, software, or equipment that allows practice without consequences—no scores recorded, no resources depleted, no penalties for mistakes.
Athletes and musicians use the term similarly for practice sessions distinct from performance: I'm still in training mode for the marathon.
The phrase extends to any preparatory phase before the real thing begins.
