escadrille
Small aircraft unit
An escadrille is a small squadron of aircraft, typically six to twelve planes, or the unit of pilots who fly them.
The term comes from French military aviation and saw heavy use during World War I: He joined an escadrille on the Western Front.
The Lafayette Escadrille was a famous unit of American volunteer pilots who flew for France before the U.S. entered the war.
