emo

Angsty punk offshoot

Emo is a style of rock music characterized by emotional, confessional lyrics and a melodic punk sound that emerged in the 1980s and peaked in mainstream popularity in the 2000s.

The term extends to the associated subculture—dark clothing, side-swept hair, eyeliner, and an aesthetic embracing melancholy and sensitivity: She went through an emo phase in high school.

Often used dismissively for anything perceived as overly emotional or dramatic: Stop being so emo about it.
