economic stagnation
Prolonged financial flatline
Economic stagnation is a prolonged period when an economy shows little or no growth.
Output remains flat, unemployment stays high, and wages don't rise.
Unlike a recession, which implies contraction, stagnation suggests an economy stuck in place: Japan experienced decades of economic stagnation after its asset bubble burst.
The term often appears in discussions of policy failure or structural problems that prevent recovery.
