price controls

Government-set ceilings

Price controls are government restrictions on how much can be charged for goods or services.

A price ceiling sets a maximum (rent control, wartime rationing), while a price floor sets a minimum (minimum wage, agricultural supports).

Economists generally view price controls as creating shortages or surpluses, though they remain politically popular during crises: The government imposed price controls on gasoline.
