e-discovery
Electronic evidence gathering
E-discovery is the process of identifying, collecting, and producing electronically stored information for legal proceedings.
When litigation begins, parties must search emails, documents, databases, and other digital records for relevant evidence: The e-discovery phase uncovered deleted emails that proved crucial to the case.
The term emerged as paper documents gave way to digital storage, creating new challenges around data volume, format compatibility, and preservation obligations.
