dyking

Constructing water barriers

Dyking is the construction or maintenance of dikes—embankments built to control water, prevent flooding, or reclaim land from the sea.

The term appears most often in contexts of coastal engineering and land management: The Dutch have centuries of experience with dyking.

In some regions, dyking also refers to digging drainage ditches.
