dry heaving
Vomiting without vomit
Dry heaving is the body going through the motions of vomiting without producing anything—the convulsive gagging and retching when the stomach is empty or refuses to expel its contents.
It often follows actual vomiting or accompanies severe nausea: She spent the morning dry heaving over the toilet.
The term can describe a single episode or the ongoing condition.
