stomach churning
Deeply unsettling sensation
Stomach churning describes a sensation of unease or anxiety felt physically in the gut—the queasy, unsettled feeling that accompanies dread, nervousness, or revulsion.
As an adjective, it characterizes things that provoke this response: stomach-churning violence, a stomach-churning drop on the roller coaster.
The image is of the stomach in turmoil, contents roiling.
