dooryard
Space before entrance
A dooryard is the yard or garden area immediately surrounding a house's door, especially the front entrance.
The word is chiefly American and somewhat old-fashioned or regional, evoking rural New England settings: lilacs blooming in the dooryard, We sat in the dooryard watching the sun go down.
Walt Whitman's elegy for Lincoln made the word literary: "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd."
