wellhouse

Water source enclosure

A wellhouse is a small structure built over a well to protect it from contamination and weather.

Traditional wellhouses shelter the wellhead and pumping mechanism, often with a peaked roof and sometimes decorative features.

In rural areas, they served as cool storage for perishables before refrigeration: The butter was kept in the wellhouse.
