gay icon
LGBTQ community hero
A gay icon is a celebrity or public figure who holds special significance within LGBTQ+ culture, typically someone admired for qualities like resilience, glamour, emotional expressiveness, or defiance of convention.
The status often emerges organically from gay audiences rather than being claimed: Judy Garland was the original gay icon.
Icons range from openly gay figures to straight allies to entertainers whose tragic lives or camp sensibility resonates: Cher, Madonna, and Dolly Parton are perennial gay icons.
