dire wolves

Ice Age predators

Dire wolves were large prehistoric canines that roamed North America until about 10,000 years ago.

Bigger and more heavily built than modern gray wolves, they're among the most common large mammals found in the La Brea Tar Pits.

The term gained renewed currency through *Game of Thrones*, where dire wolves appear as fictional companions to the Stark children.
