jackals
African pack scavengers
Jackals are wild dogs native to Africa and Asia, smaller than wolves and known for scavenging carrion.
They hunt small prey but readily feed on kills left by larger predators.
Figuratively, a jackal is someone who does dirty work for another or profits from others' efforts: The dictator's jackals carried out the arrests.
