deranking

Dropping in standings

Deranking is the deliberate lowering of a website's or content's position in search results or algorithmic feeds.

Search engines derank pages that violate guidelines or spread misinformation; social platforms derank posts to reduce their visibility without outright removal: The site was deranked after using manipulative SEO tactics.

The term also applies to competitive gaming, where players intentionally lose to drop in rank.
