dentary

Lower jaw bone

The dentary is the bone forming the lower jaw in mammals, or the tooth-bearing bone of the lower jaw in other vertebrates.

In mammals, it's the only bone in each half of the mandible; in reptiles and fish, it's one of several bones making up the jaw.

The term appears mainly in anatomy and paleontology: The fossil's dentary showed distinctive wear patterns.
