penalty kill

Down-a-man defense

In hockey, a penalty kill is the period when a team plays shorthanded because one or more players are in the penalty box.

The shorthanded team tries to prevent the opposing team's power play from scoring until the penalty expires.

A team with strong defense is said to have a good penalty kill: They killed off three penalties in the second period.
