deadmen

Those no longer living

Deadmen is the plural of deadman, a term with several technical meanings united by the idea of something buried or fixed as an anchor.

In construction and landscaping, a deadman is a buried timber, concrete block, or other heavy object used to anchor retaining walls or guy-wires.

In mining, it refers to timbers left in place to support excavations.

The word also appears in bartending slang for empty bottles left on a bar or counter.
