dead man's handle

Operator vigilance device

A dead man's handle is a safety mechanism that requires continuous pressure to operate—if the operator becomes incapacitated and releases it, the machine stops or shuts down.

Common on trains, industrial equipment, and some power tools: The locomotive's dead man's handle ensured the train would brake if the engineer collapsed.

Also called a dead man's switch.
