Crenation is the scalloped or notched appearance of an edge, like the rounded teeth on a leaf margin or the wavy outline of a red blood cell that has lost water.
In biology, crenated cells have shrunk in hypertonic solution, causing their membranes to wrinkle: The cells showed crenation after exposure to salt water.
