excystation
Leaving protective shell
Excystation is the process by which an organism emerges from a cyst—a protective, dormant capsule.
The term appears in microbiology and parasitology, describing how parasites like Giardia or amoebae become active after being ingested by a host: Excystation occurs in the small intestine when conditions favor growth.
The opposite process, forming a cyst, is encystment or encystation.
