credit note

Merchant's IOU document

A credit note is a document issued by a seller to a buyer, reducing the amount owed.

It typically arises when goods are returned, damaged, or overcharged: The store issued a credit note for the defective merchandise.

The amount can be applied to future purchases or, in some cases, refunded.

Also called a credit memo.
