crawdads

Mini lobster cousins

Crawdads are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, found in streams, ponds, and muddy burrows across North America.

The word is regional American English, used interchangeably with crayfish and crawfish depending on where you are: We caught crawdads in the creek behind the house.

They're eaten in Cajun cuisine and used as fishing bait.
