craniectomy
Brain decompression procedure
A craniectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the skull is removed.
Unlike a craniotomy, where the bone flap is replaced afterward, a craniectomy leaves the skull open—typically to relieve pressure from brain swelling after trauma or stroke.
The bone may be reattached later in a separate procedure.
