covered bridge

Sheltered river crossing

A covered bridge is a bridge with a roof and enclosed sides, typically built of wood.

The covering protects the structural timbers from weather, extending the bridge's lifespan.

Most surviving examples date from the 19th century and are now preserved as historic landmarks: We drove through a covered bridge in Vermont.
