kingpost
Central roof support
A kingpost is a central vertical beam in a roof truss, extending from the apex down to a horizontal tie beam below.
This structural element helps distribute the weight of the roof and prevent the rafters from sagging.
The term also applies to similar vertical supports in bridges and other frameworks where a central post bears load from above.
