contraflow
Against traffic direction
Contraflow refers to a traffic arrangement where vehicles travel in the opposite direction from normal on a road or lane.
This typically occurs during emergencies, evacuations, or construction, when authorities open lanes normally reserved for oncoming traffic to increase capacity in one direction.
During the hurricane evacuation, contraflow was activated on the interstate.
The term is also used for dedicated bus or bicycle lanes that run against the usual traffic pattern on a one-way street.
