dicotyledons

Broad-leaved flowering plants

Dicotyledons are flowering plants whose seeds contain two embryonic leaves (cotyledons).

The group includes most familiar trees, shrubs, and garden plants—oaks, roses, beans, sunflowers.

Dicots typically have leaves with branching veins, flower parts in multiples of four or five, and a ring of vascular tissue in the stem.

Often shortened to dicots.
