true leaves
Post-cotyledon leaf structures
True leaves are the leaves that develop after a seedling's initial cotyledons (seed leaves).
While cotyledons emerge first and provide early nutrition, true leaves represent the plant's mature leaf form with characteristic shape and function: Once the true leaves appear, you can transplant the seedlings.
Gardeners watch for true leaves as a sign the plant is established enough to handle transplanting or thinning.
