cortical columns
Neural processing units
Cortical columns are vertical arrangements of neurons in the cerebral cortex that span from the brain's surface down through its layers and respond to the same type of sensory input.
First described in studies of the visual and somatosensory cortex, these columns appear to function as basic processing units, with neurons in each column sharing similar response properties.
The concept remains somewhat debated, as column boundaries and organization vary across different brain regions.
