Brodmann areas

Brain region map

Brodmann areas are regions of the cerebral cortex distinguished by their cellular structure, numbered 1 through 52.

German neurologist Korbinian Brodmann mapped them in 1909.

The numbering system remains standard in neuroscience for identifying brain regions: Damage to Brodmann area 17 affects vision.

Different areas correspond to different functions—area 4 controls movement, areas 41 and 42 process sound.
