Printmaking metal surfaces
Copperplates are polished copper sheets used in a printing technique where designs are engraved into the metal surface.
The term also refers to the prints made from such plates, or to a style of elegant, formal handwriting that mimics the fine lines produced by copperplate engraving.
This script, with its characteristic loops and varying line thickness, was standard for formal documents and correspondence from the 18th century onward.
