engrosser

One who monopolizes

An engrosser is someone who engrosses—who absorbs attention completely or, in older legal and commercial usage, who copies documents in large, formal handwriting.

Historically, an engrosser was also a merchant who bought up commodities in bulk to control supply and raise prices, a practice once illegal: The engrossers of grain were blamed for the famine.
