copperheads

Bronze-hued venomous snakes

Copperheads are venomous pit vipers native to eastern North America, named for their copper-colored heads.

The term also refers to Northern Democrats who opposed the Civil War and advocated peace with the Confederacy—their enemies compared them to the snake that strikes without warning.

The copperhead was coiled under the woodpile.
