coordinate systems
Position reference schemes
Coordinate systems are frameworks for specifying positions in space using numbers.
The most familiar is the Cartesian system, which locates points by their distances along perpendicular axes—x and y on a plane, adding z for three dimensions.
Polar coordinates use angle and distance from a center point.
Different systems suit different problems: Cartesian coordinates work well for city grids, but polar coordinates are natural for circular motion.
