conchie

Refuses military service

Conchie is British slang, usually disparaging, for a conscientious objector—someone who refuses military service on moral or religious grounds.

The term emerged during World War I when conscription laws first allowed such exemptions: The conchies were sent to do farm work instead.

Also spelled conchy.
