compact fluorescent lamps

Curly energy-saving lights

Compact fluorescent lamps are energy-efficient light bulbs that use a gas-filled tube folded or coiled to fit into standard light fixtures.

They produce light when electricity excites mercury vapor, which emits ultraviolet light that causes a phosphor coating to glow.

Often abbreviated CFL, they use far less energy than incandescent bulbs but have been largely superseded by LED technology.
