incandescent lamps
Edison's glowing invention
Incandescent lamps produce light by heating a filament until it glows white-hot.
For over a century they were the dominant form of electric lighting, but their inefficiency—most energy converts to heat rather than light—has led to replacement by LEDs and fluorescents.
The warm glow remains nostalgic: The old theater still uses incandescent lamps.
