combining character

Modifies preceding glyph

A combining character is a Unicode character that doesn't stand alone but modifies the character it follows—adding accents, diacritical marks, or other modifications.

The é in café can be a single character or an e followed by a combining acute accent.

Combining characters allow flexible text representation: any base letter can receive any diacritical mark without requiring a separate precomposed character for every possible combination.
