columbine

Colorado state flower

Columbine is a flowering plant with distinctive spurred petals, common in gardens and mountain meadows.

The flowers have an unusual shape—five petals with backward-projecting spurs—often in blue, purple, pink, or white.

Wild columbine grew along the rocky trail.

The name comes from a Latin word for dove, which the flower supposedly resembles. (Capitalized Columbine refers to a stock character in commedia dell'arte, or to the 1999 school shooting in Colorado.)
