Pierrot

Lovelorn white clown

Pierrot is a stock character from 17th-century French and Italian theatrical traditions—a naive, lovesick servant in white makeup and baggy white clothing.

He represents unrequited love and gentle pathos, forever pining for Columbine while she pursues Harlequin.

The figure became an iconic image in later art and poetry: Picasso painted Pierrot repeatedly. (Lowercase pierrot refers to the type or costume generally.)
