colormap

Data visualization spectrum

A colormap is a scheme that assigns colors to numerical values, used in data visualization to represent magnitude or category.

Scientific plots, heat maps, and satellite imagery rely on colormaps to make patterns visible: The default colormap made temperature differences hard to see, so I switched to one with more contrast.

Common colormaps include rainbow gradients, sequential schemes from light to dark, and diverging schemes that emphasize deviation from a center point.
